Thailand Initiates UNESCO Bid for Kruba Sriwichai’s 150th Anniversary
The Ministry of Culture has begun the formal process to seek UNESCO recognition for the 150th birth anniversary of the influential Lanna monk, Kruba Sriwichai.
On September 15, 2026, Thailand’s Ministry of Culture held its first committee meeting of the year to advance a proposal for UNESCO to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Kruba Sriwichai. Culture Minister Sabida Thaiseth presided over the session, marking the start of the formal bid process.
Kruba Sriwichai is a highly revered figure in northern Thailand, celebrated for his significant contributions to Lanna culture and his role in community development. His legacy is deeply embedded in the history of the region, particularly through his efforts in infrastructure and religious restoration.
For residents and travellers, this initiative highlights the ongoing national effort to preserve and promote northern Thai heritage on a global stage. If successful, the UNESCO recognition could lead to increased international interest in the historical sites and cultural traditions associated with the monk’s life and work.
At this stage, the proposal is in its preliminary phase.
