Northeastern Thailand Census Reveals Shifting Economic and Demographic Trends
The National Statistical Office’s 2025 census highlights significant urbanization and labor migration patterns in Northeast Thailand, with the Eastern Economic Corridor emerging as a key destination.
According to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) at a regional event in Khon Kaen, Northeast Thailand has undergone substantial demographic shifts over the past 15 years. The 2025 Population and Housing Census indicates that urbanization in the region has grown by 29.1%. Concurrently, the average household size has decreased to 3.0 people, while the elderly population has risen to 23.3%.
Labor migration patterns are also evolving. While Bangkok remains a destination, the data shows that workers from the Northeast are increasingly moving toward Chon Buri and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Yutthana Photiwihok, Deputy Governor of Khon Kaen, noted that these changes present both challenges and opportunities for the private sector to align business strategies with the new demographic structure.
For residents and those monitoring the regional economy, these trends suggest a shift in labor demand and consumer needs. The data provides a foundation for understanding how the regional economy is integrating with the EEC.
