Economic Party Proposes Death Penalty for Corruption and Repeat Offenses
The Economic Party has introduced three legislative amendments to impose the death penalty for corruption and repeat criminal offenses in Thailand.
On September 17, 2026, the Economic Party, led by General Rangsee Kitiyansap and party-list MP Chris Potranan, announced a proposal at the Thai Parliament to amend three key laws: the Criminal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, and the Corrections Act. According to Khaosod Online, the party aims to mandate the death penalty for corruption cases—targeting both those who offer and receive bribes—and for repeat criminal offenders. The proposal also seeks to eliminate sentence reductions for these crimes and increase penalties for state officials and individuals within the justice system involved in such misconduct.
General Rangsee stated that the initiative is part of the party’s anti-corruption policy, noting that corruption negatively impacts Thailand’s investment climate and tourism sector. He highlighted that the country currently holds a Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score of 33 out of 100.
