A Bangkok man discovered his mother's vacant home in Udon Thani had been stripped of valuables, accompanied by an unexplained electricity bill of nearly 50,000 baht.
On September 16, 2026, a 57-year-old Bangkok resident named Sitthipol reported a burglary at his mother’s unoccupied home in Ban Chan, Udon Thani, to local police. According to Khaosod Online, the homeowner discovered the property had been ransacked, with thieves stealing various items including air conditioning units, water pumps, lawnmowers, and electrical wiring from both inside and around the premises.
The discovery was prompted by an alarming electricity bill of 49,681.90 baht for the month of September, a significant increase from the usual monthly cost of less than 100 baht. Sitthipol expressed frustration, noting that when he contacted the local electricity office, he did not receive a clear explanation, with officials only suggesting there might be a power leak.
For residents and property owners, this incident highlights the risks associated with leaving homes unattended for extended periods. Beyond the loss of physical assets, the case underscores the potential for utility-related anomalies to serve as early indicators of unauthorized entry. As of now, the investigation by the Udon Thani City Police is ongoing. It remains to be confirmed whether the massive electricity bill was caused by the thieves’ activities or a technical fault, and the identity of the perpetrators has yet to be established.
