Bangkok City Council Rejects 6 Billion Baht EV Garbage Truck Project

According to Prachachat Business, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has faced a setback in its environmental initiatives. Deputy Governor Pornphrom Vikitsreth announced that the Bangkok City Council has rejected a proposed 6-billion-baht project to lease electric vehicle (EV) garbage trucks over a five-year period.

City officials had defended the project as a transparent effort to transition the capital toward cleaner energy and reduce urban pollution. The BMA expressed regret over the decision, noting that the rejection prevents Bangkok from moving forward with its goal of becoming a zero-emission city through the modernization of its waste management fleet.

For residents and visitors, this decision means that the city will continue to rely on its existing waste collection vehicles rather than transitioning to a quieter, cleaner electric fleet in the near term. While the BMA maintains that the project was designed with transparency, the council’s decision effectively halts the immediate implementation of this green initiative. It remains to be confirmed whether the BMA will attempt to revise and resubmit the proposal for future consideration or if the project will be abandoned entirely.
