Banpu Expands US Energy Footprint with Barnett Shale Acquisition

Thai energy firm Banpu has finalized the acquisition of natural gas assets in Texas, significantly increasing its production capacity and carbon capture capabilities.

On September 16, 2026, the Thai energy company Banpu announced that its subsidiary, BKV, has successfully completed the acquisition of natural gas assets located in the Barnett Shale region of Texas, USA. According to Prachachat Business, the deal encompasses the entire production business, associated infrastructure, and existing carbon capture and storage projects.

This strategic expansion adds approximately 1,000 production wells to Banpu’s portfolio, along with 117,000 acres of concession area. The acquisition is expected to boost the company's natural gas production capacity by roughly 65 million cubic feet equivalent per day.

For residents and travelers in Thailand, this development highlights the continued international expansion of major Thai energy conglomerates. While this move strengthens Banpu’s global operational scale and integrates new carbon-capture technology into its business model, it does not have an immediate impact on local energy prices or daily life in Thailand.

At this stage, the long-term financial impact of this acquisition on Banpu’s domestic stock performance and the specific timeline for the full integration of the carbon capture projects remain to be confirmed. Observers will be watching to see how these US-based assets contribute to the company’s broader sustainability goals.
