Thailand Meteorological Department Issues Heavy Rain Warning for September 17–20
A four-day weather alert has been issued for Thailand, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds across the country starting September 17.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its fourth warning regarding severe weather conditions expected to impact Thailand from September 17 to September 20, 2026. According to the report from Khaosod Online, a cold air mass from China is moving into the upper northern and northeastern regions, causing a monsoon trough to shift over the central, eastern, and upper southern parts of the country. Simultaneously, the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is intensifying.
Residents and travelers should prepare for heavy to very heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and regions near hillsides. The northern and northeastern regions are expected to be affected first on September 17, with the central, eastern, and southern regions following on September 18. Additionally, the Andaman Sea is experiencing strong winds, with wave heights reaching 2–3 meters, and exceeding 3 meters in areas with thunderstorms.
For those currently in Thailand, it is advised to monitor local weather updates closely and avoid traveling through areas prone to recurring flooding. While the TMD has identified the general timeline and regions at risk, specific localized impacts remain subject to change based on the movement of the weather systems. Travelers are encouraged to exercise caution near waterways and coastal areas during this 96-hour period.
