Japanese Mattress Company Hosts Unique 90-Minute Sleep Competition
A Japanese mattress firm is organizing a sleep-focused competition in Tokyo, offering a prize of 480,000 THB for the highest-scoring sleeper.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, a Japanese mattress company has announced a unique competition titled 'Mattrace by Koala,' scheduled for October 5 in Tokyo. Participants will compete for a grand prize of 2.22 million yen, approximately 480,000 Thai Baht. The prize amount is a play on the 'Zzz' sound often associated with snoring.
Unlike typical endurance contests, this event evaluates the quality of sleep rather than just duration. Competitors will wear sleep-tracking devices while resting on the company’s mattresses for a 90-minute session. Medical professionals will oversee the evaluation, which calculates scores based on sleep depth, the time taken to fall asleep, and sleep continuity across three rounds. Beyond the grand prize, special awards will be given for exceptionally deep sleep or unique sleeping positions. Participants will also engage in warm-up activities to prepare for the session.
For residents or travelers interested in sleep health, this event highlights the growing focus on sleep technology and data-driven rest. While the competition offers a fun look at sleep science, it remains to be seen how the specific scoring algorithms will be applied to different physiological profiles. Those interested in participating should note that the event is free to enter, though further details regarding international eligibility or specific registration requirements for non-residents have not been fully clarified.
