Phuket Expressway Project Advances with 2031 Opening Target
The Thai government has progressed with the first phase of the Phuket Expressway, aiming to significantly reduce travel time between Kathu and Patong.
According to a report by Khaosod English on September 16, 2026, the Thai government is moving forward with the initial phase of the Phuket Expressway project. This infrastructure development focuses on creating a direct link between the districts of Kathu and Patong.
Deputy government spokeswoman Ploythalay Laksameesaengjan stated that the project has been officially submitted for further processing. The primary objective of this expressway is to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity on the island. Officials anticipate that once completed, the new route will reduce the travel time between Kathu and Patong from the current average of 30 minutes to approximately five minutes.
For residents and frequent visitors to Phuket, this project represents a significant potential improvement in local mobility, as the current mountain road between these two popular areas is often subject to heavy traffic. The government has set a target opening date for the expressway in 2031.
