Sustainable Farming Transformation in Bang Tha Kham
A community in Surat Thani has successfully transitioned to integrated vegetable farming, improving local livelihoods after decades of agricultural hardship.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Bang Tha Kham community in Phunphin District, Surat Thani, has achieved a significant agricultural turnaround. Settled in 1962 by migrants from central Thailand, the area—located at the confluence of the Tapi and Phumduang rivers—long struggled with poor soil quality, flooding, and low crop prices.
Over the past decade, support from local agricultural offices has encouraged residents to adopt integrated, safe vegetable farming practices. This initiative led to the formal registration of the Bang Tha Kham Sustainable Integrated Farming Community Enterprise in 2015, followed by the establishment of the 'Bang Tha Kham Large-Scale Vegetable Plot' in 2017. Currently, the project involves 58 members managing 643 rai of land. In 2021, the group further modernized its operations by integrating agricultural machinery and technology through a government-backed project.
For residents and visitors, this transformation highlights a resilient model of community-led development in southern Thailand. The success of this project serves as a regional benchmark for sustainable agriculture. While the community has established a strong foundation for economic stability, the long-term impact of these technological upgrades on market expansion and climate resilience remains to be seen as the project continues to evolve.
