Thai Cabinet Approves New Petroleum Exploration Concessions
The Thai government has granted three new onshore petroleum exploration concessions to PTTEP and a joint venture between Pan Orient Energy and CanAsia Energy.
On September 15, 2026, the Thai Cabinet officially approved the selection of concessionaires for the 25th round of onshore petroleum exploration, as reported by Khaosod Online. According to Warakorn Prommohobol, Director-General of the Department of Mineral Fuels, the decision follows a competitive bidding process initiated by the Ministry of Energy in late 2024.
The approved concessions cover three specific onshore blocks located in Thailand's northeastern and central regions. PTTEP International Limited has been awarded the rights for blocks L1/66 and L3/66. Meanwhile, Pan Orient Energy (Siam) Limited, in partnership with CanAsia Energy Corp., has secured the rights for block L8/66.
For residents and travelers, this development signals a long-term commitment to domestic energy production. While these exploration activities are industrial in nature and generally occur in designated zones away from major tourist hubs, they represent a significant step in the country's energy policy. At this stage, the specific operational timelines for the commencement of drilling and the potential environmental impact assessments for these sites remain to be confirmed by the relevant authorities. The government has not yet released detailed schedules regarding when these companies will begin their physical exploration activities on the ground.
