Chiang Mai Prepares for Heavy Rainfall Expected September 17–20
Chiang Mai authorities are installing water pumps and mobilizing equipment in anticipation of increased rainfall forecasted for mid-September.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on September 15, 2026, Chiang Mai provincial officials are taking proactive measures to mitigate potential flooding. Deputy Governor Siwakorn Buapong chaired a meeting at the Irrigation Office 1’s Intelligent Water Operation Center to coordinate disaster preparedness efforts.
While the province has experienced minimal rainfall over the past week, the Northern Meteorological Center has forecasted an increase in precipitation between September 17 and 20, 2026. This shift is attributed to a high-pressure system moving into the northern region, which is expected to bring widespread thunderstorms. Although current forecasts do not indicate a severe storm, officials are prioritizing the protection of economic zones.
To prepare, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has installed water pumps at eight identified high-risk locations. Personnel and heavy machinery have been mobilized to respond quickly to potential flash floods or landslides. For residents and travelers, this means staying informed about local weather updates is essential, as conditions could change rapidly. While the current outlook suggests moderate to heavy rain rather than a major storm, the situation remains under observation. Authorities have not yet issued evacuation orders, but they are maintaining a state of readiness to manage water levels and prevent significant flooding in vulnerable areas.
