Thai Government Cancels New Ministry of Transport Building Project

According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the Thai Cabinet has approved a review of its October 2025 resolution, effectively canceling the construction of a new Ministry of Transport headquarters. The project, which was originally slated for the 2026–2028 fiscal years, had a total budget allocation of approximately 3.55 billion baht, comprising 3.45 billion baht for construction and 103.46 million baht for construction supervision.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploy-Talay Laksameesaengchan stated that the decision was driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This geopolitical situation has negatively impacted global energy stability, leading to increased energy costs and production expenses in Thailand. These rising costs have subsequently affected the prices of goods, services, and the overall cost of living for the public, as well as agricultural and industrial production factors.

For residents and travelers, this shift indicates a government move toward fiscal austerity in response to external economic volatility. While the ministry will now seek to lease office space rather than build a new facility, the specific details regarding where these operations will be relocated or how the leasing process will be managed remain to be confirmed. The cancellation marks a significant pivot in public infrastructure spending as the administration prioritizes economic stability over new capital projects.
