Thai Cabinet Approves 2.08 Billion Baht Upgrade for Sirikit Dam Power Plant
The Thai government has authorized a major renovation project for the Sirikit Dam hydroelectric plant to extend its operational lifespan by three decades.
On September 15, 2026, Khaosod Online reported that the Thai Cabinet approved a budget of 2.088 billion baht for the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to renovate the fourth unit of the Sirikit Dam hydroelectric power plant in Uttaradit province.
According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesangchan, the project aims to enhance the reliability and security of the national power grid. The fourth unit, which has been in operation for approximately 31 years, has experienced equipment degradation and a lack of available spare parts, necessitating this intervention to ensure continued safety and operational efficiency. EGAT officials stated that this renovation is more cost-effective than developing new power generation sources and will extend the facility's service life by at least 30 years.
For residents and travelers in the Uttaradit region, this project signifies a commitment to maintaining stable electricity infrastructure. While the upgrade is intended to secure long-term energy production, the specific timeline for the commencement of construction and any potential temporary impacts on local grid stability or dam operations during the renovation phase remain to be confirmed by EGAT. The facility currently features four generators with a total capacity of 500 megawatts, contributing significantly to the regional energy supply.
