EGAT and USTDA Partner to Study Small Modular Reactor Feasibility

According to a report by Thai Post, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has officially signed an agreement to receive funding from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). This grant is designated for a comprehensive feasibility study regarding the implementation of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology within Thailand’s power grid.

For residents and long-term visitors, this development signals a strategic shift in Thailand’s energy policy as the nation seeks to bolster its clean energy security. SMRs are advanced nuclear reactors that are smaller in size and capacity compared to traditional nuclear power plants, often touted for their potential to provide stable, low-carbon electricity. As Thailand explores diversifying its energy mix, this study represents a preliminary step toward integrating nuclear energy into the national infrastructure.

It is important to note that this agreement is strictly limited to a feasibility study. At this stage, no decisions have been made regarding the construction or deployment of any nuclear facilities.
