Parliament House Cafeteria Ceiling Collapse Attributed to Condensation

On September 15, 2026, House Speaker Sophon Sarum addressed reports of a ceiling collapse that occurred in the B2-level cafeteria of the Thai Parliament House. Following an inspection by the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning on September 14, officials concluded that the building's structural integrity remains sound.

According to Sophon, the incident was caused by water condensation dripping from air conditioning pipes onto the smart-board ceiling panels. The moisture caused the panels to swell, and the existing small screws were insufficient to hold the weight, leading to the collapse. The Department of Public Works has recommended replacing the smaller screws with larger ones to secure the panels along the air conditioning ducts.

Sophon dismissed public speculation that the incident was related to the building’s warranty expiration, characterizing the event as a routine maintenance issue typical of large structures. He emphasized that the cafeteria is 100% safe and that maintenance will continue as needed to ensure the facility remains in good condition.

For residents and visitors, this incident highlights the ongoing maintenance requirements of the relatively new parliamentary complex.
