Thailand and Sri Lanka Sign Labor Cooperation Agreement
Thailand plans to import 10,000 workers from Sri Lanka starting in January 2027 to address labor shortages in the construction and agricultural sectors.
On September 14, 2026, Thai Minister of Labor Julapun Amornvivat and Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a formal labor employment agreement at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok. According to Khaosod Online, this initiative aims to establish a legal framework for the recruitment and importation of Sri Lankan workers to Thailand.
The government intends to bring in an initial batch of 10,000 workers by January 2027. Minister Julapun stated that this partnership is designed to address significant labor shortages currently affecting Thailand’s construction and agricultural industries. He emphasized that the agreement is built on principles of transparency and fairness, aiming to foster a long-term labor partnership between the two nations, which share deep historical and religious ties.
