Bangkok Council to Review Controversial 6 Billion Baht EV Garbage Truck Rental Plan
The Bangkok Metropolitan Council is set to debate a 6 billion baht budget for leasing electric garbage trucks during the upcoming 2027 fiscal budget review.
On September 15, 2026, the Bangkok Metropolitan Council will convene for an extraordinary session to deliberate on the 2027 fiscal budget, totaling approximately 93.9 billion baht. A focal point of the discussion involves three projects proposed by the Environment Department to lease electric garbage trucks, with a total commitment of 6.038 billion baht over five years.
According to Khaosod Online, these projects are intended to replace 1,347 existing combustion-engine garbage trucks whose contracts are set to expire in 2027. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt is expected to attend the session to provide clarifications regarding the procurement, which has faced scrutiny and was previously reserved for further deliberation by the council.
For residents and those living in the capital, this debate is significant as it concerns the modernization of municipal waste management services and the allocation of substantial public funds. While the transition to electric vehicles aims to modernize the fleet, the scale of the budget and the procurement process remain under close observation.
