PTT Highlights Natural Gas as Essential for Thailand’s Energy Future
PTT CEO Kongkrapan Intarajang stated that natural gas and LNG will remain critical to Thailand's energy security for the next 30 years, with plans to expand LNG capacity to 15 million tons by 2035.
At the Gastech 2026 conference, PTT Public Company Limited CEO Kongkrapan Intarajang emphasized that natural gas and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will continue to play a vital role in the global and Thai energy landscape for the next two to three decades. Despite the global shift toward clean energy, PTT maintains that gas is essential for balancing energy security, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.
Currently, Thailand relies on natural gas for a significant portion of its electricity and industrial production. According to PTT, the supply mix consists of approximately 50% from the Gulf of Thailand, over 10% imported from Myanmar, and more than 30% sourced from the global LNG market. To ensure long-term stability, PTT is focusing on diversifying its gas sources and expanding its global trading operations. The company also aims to reach an LNG capacity of 15 million tons by 2035.
For residents and travelers, this strategy suggests that Thailand intends to maintain a stable energy supply during the transition to cleaner alternatives. PTT is simultaneously investing in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to mitigate environmental impacts. While the company is confident in its ability to manage potential supply disruptions, such as those in the Strait of Hormuz, the long-term success of these carbon-reduction initiatives and the specific impact on future energy pricing remain to be confirmed.
