Thailand Tightens Regulations on Weight-Loss Injections

According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially upgraded the regulatory status of GLP-1 weight-loss injections to 'specially controlled drugs.' This policy change takes effect on September 15, 2026.

Under the new mandate, these medications can only be dispensed with a valid prescription from a licensed physician. To support this enforcement, the FDA is implementing a 'Track & Trace' system designed to monitor the distribution of these drugs. The primary objective of this initiative is to curb the circulation of counterfeit products and prevent the sale of medications through unauthorized, non-systemic channels.

For residents and long-term visitors in Thailand, this change means that obtaining these specific weight-loss treatments will now require a formal medical consultation and a prescription. The FDA has emphasized that these measures are intended to regulate supply chains and ensure safety, noting that the new rules are not expected to negatively impact patients who have a legitimate medical necessity for the medication.
