Traffic Disruption at Rama 5 Intersection Due to Sleeping Driver
A driver was found unconscious at a red light in Nonthaburi, causing a 20-minute traffic delay before being moved by authorities.
On the morning of September 14, 2026, traffic police in Nonthaburi responded to a report of a stationary BMW blocking the middle lane at the Rama 5 intersection on Pibulsongkram Road. According to Khaosod Online, officers discovered a man in his 40s asleep behind the wheel. Despite attempts to wake him for over 20 minutes, the driver remained unresponsive, prompting concerns regarding a potential medical emergency or health condition.
To alleviate the resulting traffic congestion, authorities utilized a tow truck to relocate the vehicle to the Rama 5 traffic police booth. Once moved, the driver finally awoke and exited the vehicle. He explained to police that he was suffering from extreme fatigue due to staying up late to watch a Premier League football match between Manchester United and Manchester City.
For residents and commuters, this incident serves as a reminder of the impact that driver fatigue can have on road safety and traffic flow in urban areas. While the driver attributed his state to sleep deprivation, it remains to be confirmed if any further medical evaluations were conducted or if legal actions regarding traffic obstruction were pursued. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant about their physical condition before operating a vehicle to avoid similar disruptions.
