Thailand’s Department of Climate Change and Environment Launches Sectoral Adaptation Plan
The Department of Climate Change and Environment has introduced a new sectoral adaptation plan to address climate risks, aiming to integrate national goals with local action.
On September 14, 2026, at the Best Western Chatuchak in Bangkok, Dr. Phirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of the Department of Climate Change and Environment, presided over a meeting to disseminate Thailand’s sectoral climate change adaptation action plan. This initiative is designed to translate the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) into practical, actionable measures at the provincial and local levels.
According to Khaosod Online, the department aims to align domestic performance indicators with global climate targets. Dr. Phirun emphasized that climate change poses unavoidable risks to public health, the economy, society, and ecosystems. Citing the WMO’s 'State of the Global Climate 2025' report, he noted that the 2015–2025 period represents the hottest 11 years on record. Furthermore, the 2026 El Niño phenomenon has intensified rapidly, with relative heat indices currently 2.3 degrees Celsius above average.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights the government's focus on managing extreme weather impacts.
