Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce Tightens Oversight on Corn Purchasing

As the animal feed corn harvest enters the market, Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has launched a nationwide initiative to regulate purchasing practices. According to Khaosod Online, DIT Director-General Wattanasak Sur-iam stated that the department is closely monitoring factories, collectors, and local purchasing points to ensure transparency in weighing, moisture measurement, and price labeling.

For residents and those involved in the agricultural sector, this oversight is significant as it aims to prevent unfair deductions based on inaccurate moisture readings or non-standardized scales, which directly impact farmers' incomes. The DIT is coordinating with provincial commerce offices and weights and measures officials to conduct ongoing inspections. During a recent visit to a CPF feed mill in Ratchaburi, officials observed that the facility is operating at full capacity with a pre-registration system to manage supply flow and reduce congestion.

While the government is actively enforcing these standards to protect producers, the long-term impact on market prices remains to be confirmed. Residents should note that these regulatory efforts are intended to stabilize the supply chain, though they may not immediately alter retail food costs. The DIT continues to urge operators to strictly adhere to Ministry of Commerce guidelines regarding quality-based purchasing.
