Thai Government Intensifies Efforts to Combat Blackchin Tilapia Infestation

According to a report by Khaosod Online, the Thai government is escalating its response to the ongoing blackchin tilapia infestation, which has impacted 21 provinces since 2023. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has been directed to adopt a more aggressive and rapid approach to protect local ecosystems and the livelihoods of those dependent on aquatic resources.

To streamline operations, the government plans to establish a special committee and deploy rapid-response teams in each affected province. These teams are tasked with coordinating inter-agency efforts to capture and control the invasive species while reducing bureaucratic delays.

While the government has allocated 70–90 million baht for the 2027 fiscal year, officials acknowledge this may be insufficient given the scale of the spread. Consequently, the Ministry is seeking an additional 350 million baht from the central budget to ensure comprehensive control measures. This initiative follows a Central Administrative Court ruling that previously ordered the Department of Fisheries to accelerate its eradication and containment plans.

For residents and travelers, this situation primarily concerns the health of local waterways and the stability of the fishing industry. While the government is taking active steps to mitigate environmental damage, the full extent of the required funding and the timeline for successfully curbing the population remain to be confirmed.
