Thai Ministry of Higher Education Implements Measures to Curb Student Violence

Following a recent violent incident between students from Uthen Thawai and Pathumwan Institute of Technology at a public transit station, the Thai Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) has announced a four-point emergency plan. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Chen Yoschanan Wongsawat, outlined these measures to mitigate the recurring issue of inter-institutional violence, which has increasingly impacted public safety and caused concern among residents and commuters.

The ministry’s plan includes suspending on-site instruction at both institutions for at least three months. Furthermore, the ministry is seeking alternative locations for Uthen Thawai, while Pathumwan Institute of Technology is tasked with developing a transition plan, as it lacks additional campuses. Long-term, the ministry intends to relocate both institutions from their current sites. Specifically, the land currently occupied by Uthen Thawai, which is owned by Chulalongkorn University, is slated for educational development rather than commercial use.
