According to a report by Khaosod Online, a 25-year-old man in Thailand experienced a severe medical emergency after an insect flew into his eye while he was riding a motorcycle without a helmet. The patient delayed seeking medical attention for two days, during which time a fungal infection developed and rapidly progressed, resulting in a perforated cornea within three weeks.

Medical professionals at the Khemruethai Eye Clinic noted that the patient’s condition was significantly worsened by previously undiagnosed diabetes. The patient reportedly consumed two liters of soda daily for several years, which contributed to a weakened immune system, allowing the fungal infection to spread with unusual speed and severity. The patient underwent a successful corneal transplant last week, facilitated by the Thai Red Cross Society, and has since regained his vision.
