Investigation Requested After Toddler Suffers Finger Amputation at Hospital
A family has sought assistance from the Saimai Tong Rod organization after a one-year-old boy lost his fingertip during a medical procedure.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, a family is seeking justice after their one-year-old son suffered a traumatic injury at a hospital. The child was receiving treatment for a fever, during which an IV line was secured to his right hand with gauze. While a male nursing assistant was attempting to remove the gauze with scissors, he accidentally severed the child's fingertip, including the nail bed.
The child was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Ubon Ratchathani, over 100 kilometers away, for emergency surgery to reattach the digit. Family members, including the child's uncle and cousin, reported to the Saimai Tong Rod organization on September 13, 2026, that they have yet to receive an apology from the nursing assistant or the hospital administration. Furthermore, the family stated that when they attempted to file a police report, they were advised to first negotiate with the hospital.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the importance of closely monitoring medical procedures involving minors. While the hospital provided immediate follow-up care and X-rays, the lack of communication and the reported difficulty in initiating legal proceedings remain points of concern. It is currently unconfirmed how the hospital will address the family's grievances or what disciplinary actions, if any, will be taken against the staff member involved.
