Dr. Chain Implements Strict Measures to End Inter-Institutional Violence
Dr. Yotchanan Wongsawat has ordered a three-month suspension of on-site classes for Uthen Thawai and Pathumwan Institute of Technology to curb long-standing violent clashes.
According to a report by Khaosod Online, Dr. Yotchanan Wongsawat has introduced decisive measures to address the persistent violent conflicts between students of Uthen Thawai and the Pathumwan Institute of Technology. These clashes have increasingly occurred in high-traffic areas, including the Siam BTS station, raising significant concerns regarding public safety in the heart of Bangkok’s tourism and economic district.
Effective September 9, 2026, both institutions have been ordered to suspend on-site learning for at least three months to prevent further confrontations. Additionally, the directive mandates the relocation of Uthen Thawai, citing a court order issued four years ago that has yet to be fully realized. Pathumwan Institute is also required to restructure its academic approach to move away from past patterns of behavior.
For residents and travelers, these measures are intended to restore security in the Pathumwan area, which serves as a major hub for students, commuters, and tourists. While these steps aim to resolve the long-standing rivalry, the long-term success of the relocation and the institutional restructuring remains to be confirmed. Observers note that this intervention is notably more aggressive than previous attempts by government officials to manage the situation.
