Investigation into Financial Misconduct at Wat Phutthaisawan
Thai authorities are investigating allegations of embezzlement involving a former abbot and his associate, with over 215 million baht in suspicious transactions under review.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand on September 12, 2026, the Crime Suppression Division is investigating the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, identified as 66-year-old Atichot Thammavaro, and a close female associate known as 'Ae'.
Police Major General Phatthanasak Bupphasuwan stated that investigators are focusing on two primary areas. First, they are examining allegations that the former monk embezzled temple funds into personal accounts while issuing official temple donation receipts. Second, authorities are tracing financial flows linked to these activities, which include receipts for donations, amulet rentals, and temple renovation contributions totaling over 215 million baht. The police are currently coordinating with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) to track these funds.
For residents and visitors, this case highlights ongoing efforts by Thai authorities to ensure transparency in religious institutions. While the temple remains a significant cultural site, the investigation serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying the legitimacy of charitable contributions.
