Investigation into Former Abbot and Associate Reveals Significant Assets
Thai authorities have seized substantial assets from a woman linked to a former abbot accused of temple fund embezzlement.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has arrested a former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya province. The former monk faces charges related to the embezzlement of temple funds, misappropriation of state assets, and allegations of maintaining an illicit relationship within the temple grounds.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police raided the residence of a 47-year-old woman identified as Ms. Punyavee, or 'Sika Ae,' in Pathum Thani’s Khlong Luang district. During the search, authorities discovered a significant collection of assets, including gold bars and jewelry valued at over 6 million baht, approximately 3.5 million baht in cash, land deeds, and government savings bonds. Neighbors interviewed by reporters noted that the woman’s financial situation appeared to improve significantly in recent years, transitioning from driving an older pickup truck to purchasing new vehicles and multiple properties.
For residents and visitors, this case highlights the ongoing scrutiny of temple financial management in Thailand. While the investigation into the misappropriation of funds is active, the specific legal outcomes for both the former abbot and his associate remain to be determined by the judicial process.
