Thailand Launches Initiative to Advance 'Regenerative Tourism'
The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration have signed an agreement to integrate research and innovation into Thailand's tourism sector.
On September 11, 2026, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), represented by the National Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA). According to Khaosod Online Thailand, this partnership aims to transition Thailand’s tourism industry toward a model of 'Regenerative Tourism.'
The agreement was signed by Dr. Surachai Sathitkunarat, Director of NXPO, and Mr. Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, Director of DASTA, with officials from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports serving as witnesses. The initiative focuses on applying academic knowledge, research, and innovation to DASTA’s designated special tourism areas. By connecting local communities, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders, the project seeks to establish international standards and measurement frameworks for regenerative practices.
For travelers and residents, this development suggests a shift toward tourism experiences that prioritize environmental and community restoration rather than just sustainability.
