Abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan Arrested Amidst Major Embezzlement Scandal
Authorities have arrested the abbot of a prominent Ayutthaya temple following allegations of massive financial misconduct and personal misconduct.
On September 11, 2026, Khaosod Online reported that police from the Crime Suppression Division arrested Phra Wachirayan Wi., also known as Luang Phor Atichot, the abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The abbot, famous for the 'Nuea Duang' sacred amulets, faces serious allegations of embezzling over 92 million baht from temple funds, which were reportedly transferred to the account of a close female associate. Furthermore, investigators recovered video evidence allegedly showing the monk engaging in sexual misconduct within his living quarters.
Initial asset inspections revealed that the abbot possessed wealth exceeding 500 million baht, including 290 million baht across various bank accounts, 138 million baht in cash found inside his quarters, and over 1,000 baht-weight of gold bars. Phra Phayom Kalayano, the abbot of Wat Suan Kaew, publicly condemned the actions, labeling the suspect a 'great bandit' who has exploited the religion for personal gain.
For residents and visitors, this case highlights a significant controversy within the local religious community, particularly concerning the management of temple donations. While the evidence presented by authorities is substantial, the legal proceedings are ongoing.
