Preserving the 3,600-Year-Old Khok Phanom Di Archaeological Site
A parliamentary committee is working to transfer management of the Khok Phanom Di archaeological site in Chon Buri to local authorities to ensure its long-term preservation.
On September 11, 2026, the House Committee on Religion, Arts, and Culture visited the Khok Phanom Di archaeological site in Tha Kham, Chon Buri, to address the management of its museum. According to Khaosod Online, the committee, led by Chairwoman Thiwalrat Angkinant, met with local officials and the Fine Arts Department to establish a sustainable preservation plan for this prehistoric site, which dates back approximately 3,600 to 4,000 years.
The proposed solution involves the Fine Arts Department registering the museum building as state property with the Treasury Department. This legal step will allow the Chon Buri Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) to formally request the use of the facility and take over its management. The committee aims to facilitate the transfer of assets and responsibilities to the local government, which will also be tasked with allocating a budget for necessary renovations.
For residents and travelers, this development is significant as it seeks to protect a vital piece of Thailand’s prehistoric heritage, ensuring the site remains accessible and well-maintained for future generations. While the framework for the transfer has been established, the timeline for the completion of the property registration and the subsequent commencement of renovation works remains to be confirmed.
