Fire on Cargo Ship in Qingdao Leaves 25 Dead
A fire aboard the Liberian-flagged cargo ship 'Ocean Melody' at a Qingdao shipyard has resulted in 25 fatalities.
According to reports from Khaosod Online and the BBC, a major fire broke out on the 190-meter cargo vessel 'Ocean Melody' while it was undergoing maintenance at a shipyard in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at approximately 11:15 a.m. local time.
Official reports from China’s CCTV state that 42 people were on board at the time of the fire. While 17 individuals were able to evacuate, 25 people have been confirmed dead. Five survivors who sustained injuries are currently reported to be in stable condition. Emergency crews managed to bring the blaze under control after more than three hours of firefighting efforts.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a full-scale search and rescue operation. Meanwhile, Premier Li Qiang has emphasized the importance of preventing secondary disasters, noting that this incident follows a recent explosion at a shipyard in Fujian Province.
