Chinese Nationals Arrested in Songkhla for Fraudulent Ritual Scam
Four Chinese nationals were apprehended in Songkhla province following allegations of defrauding a 66-year-old woman through a deceptive 'misfortune-clearing' ritual.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, police in Thung Lung, Songkhla, in coordination with immigration officers, arrested four Chinese nationals on September 9, 2026. The suspects are accused of defrauding a 66-year-old woman of nearly 200,000 baht in cash and gold.
The incident reportedly began on September 7, 2026, at the Thung Lung market in Hat Yai district. The suspects allegedly approached the victim, claiming that her son was in imminent danger and could only be saved through a specific ritual. They instructed the woman to bring gold, cash, and rice to perform a ceremony to ward off misfortune. After the victim provided these items, the suspects allegedly stole the valuables and fled.
For residents and travelers, this incident highlights the importance of remaining cautious when approached by strangers in public spaces, particularly those offering unsolicited spiritual or ritualistic services. Such scams often rely on creating a sense of urgency or fear regarding the safety of loved ones. While the suspects are currently in custody, the investigation is ongoing.
