Songkhla Moves Closer to UNESCO World Heritage Bid
Thailand’s National Committee on the World Heritage Convention has approved the preliminary assessment document for the 'Songkhla and its Associated Lagoon Settlements' site.
On September 10, 2026, the National Committee on the World Heritage Convention, chaired by Dr. Raweewan Phuridech, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, officially approved the preliminary assessment (PA) document for the 'Songkhla and its Associated Lagoon Settlements' cultural site. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, the committee has instructed the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) to submit these documents to the World Heritage Centre in Paris, France, before the September 15, 2026, deadline.
For residents and travelers, this development marks a significant step in the long-term process of potentially designating the Songkhla lagoon area as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
