Thailand’s Energy Policy and Planning Office Targets Government Fleet Electrification
The Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) is drafting a new strategy to increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) within government agencies, as current data shows only 1% of the 180,000 state-owned vehicles are battery-powered.
According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) has identified a significant gap in the electrification of Thailand’s government vehicle fleet. Out of more than 180,000 vehicles currently operated by state agencies, only 1% are battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
To address this, the EPPO is developing a comprehensive plan to accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy. The proposed strategy includes revising existing regulations regarding budget allocation, procurement processes, and vehicle rental agreements to better facilitate the adoption of EVs. Furthermore, the plan emphasizes the necessity of expanding charging infrastructure and implementing advanced data tracking systems to monitor the transition effectively. These efforts are part of a broader national initiative to reduce fossil fuel dependency and support Thailand’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.
For residents and travelers, this shift may eventually lead to a more visible presence of electric vehicles in public service roles across the country. While the initiative aims to modernize the state fleet, it remains to be confirmed how quickly these policy adjustments will be implemented and what specific timeline the government will adopt for the full transition. The EPPO continues to refine these measures to ensure they align with national sustainability targets.
