Former Abbot Arrested in 92 Million Baht Temple Embezzlement Case
Police have arrested a former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan on charges of embezzling 92 million baht, with subsequent raids uncovering significant assets held by an associate.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, police from the Crime Suppression Division have arrested Phra Wachirayan (Atichot Dhammavaro), the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The arrest follows an arrest warrant issued on September 8, 2026, by the Region 1 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases.
The former abbot faces multiple charges, including malfeasance in office, misappropriation of state property, and money laundering. Authorities allege that he embezzled approximately 92 million baht from the temple and transferred the funds to a close female associate to conceal the assets. Following the arrest, police raided the associate's residence, where they reportedly discovered large quantities of cash, gold bars, and valuable amulets.
