Police have arrested the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya following allegations of significant financial misconduct and money laundering.
On September 10, 2026, police from the Crime Suppression Division arrested Phra Wachirayan (Atichot Thammawaro), the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, Ayutthaya province. Police Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Natthasak Chaowanasai stated that the investigation began in July 2026 after an anonymous disciple provided evidence, including video clips and financial records. Authorities allege that the former abbot misappropriated temple funds, totaling approximately 92 million baht, and transferred them to a close female associate to conceal the assets. The charges include malfeasance in office, misappropriation of property, and money laundering.
