Former Abbot Arrested in Ayutthaya Over 92 Million Baht Embezzlement
Police have arrested a former abbot at Wat Phutthaisawan in Ayutthaya, seizing gold assets following allegations of massive temple fund embezzlement and misconduct.
On September 10, 2026, Khaosod Online reported that police from the Crime Suppression Division arrested Phra Wachirayan (Atichot Thammawaro), the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya district, Ayutthaya province. The arrest was executed under a warrant issued by the Region 1 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, dated September 8, 2026.
Authorities allege that the former abbot embezzled approximately 92 million baht in temple funds, transferring the money to a close female associate to launder the assets. During the search of his living quarters, police seized a round table containing gold bars and a gold Buddha statue weighing two kilograms.
