Thailand Reports 36.45% Surge in Counterfeit Goods Seizures
The Ministry of Commerce has destroyed over 2 million counterfeit items as part of an intensified crackdown on intellectual property violations.
According to a report by Prachachat Business on September 10, 2026, the Thai Ministry of Commerce has intensified its efforts to combat intellectual property (IP) infringement. Authorities recently destroyed 2,085,705 counterfeit items that were subject to finalized legal cases. These goods, which include apparel, electronics, automotive parts, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, represent a total estimated damage value of over 2.145 billion baht. This figure marks a 36.45% increase in both the volume and value of seized goods compared to the previous year.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights a significant government push to regulate the marketplace. While the crackdown aims to protect consumers from potentially unsafe or substandard products, it also signals a stricter enforcement environment regarding the sale and possession of imitation goods. The Ministry is currently collaborating with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on an IP Work Plan to further strengthen enforcement measures.
It remains to be confirmed how these intensified enforcement actions will impact the availability of goods in popular tourist markets and whether further legislative adjustments will follow.
