Thailand Destroys Over 2 Million Counterfeit Items to Boost Trade Confidence
The Ministry of Commerce has destroyed 2 million counterfeit goods worth over 2 billion baht to uphold intellectual property rights and protect consumers.
On September 10, 2026, Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, led by the Department of Intellectual Property, conducted a large-scale destruction of counterfeit goods. According to Khaosod Online Thailand, over 2 million items—with an estimated value exceeding 2 billion baht—were destroyed at the Air Defense Command in Bangkok’s Don Mueang district. These items were seized in cases where legal proceedings had reached a final conclusion.
Presiding over the ceremony, Assistant Minister to the Ministry of Commerce Piyanuch Wuttisorn stated that the government is prioritizing the protection of intellectual property rights. This initiative aims to bolster investor confidence, ensure fair trade practices, and protect consumers from substandard, illicit products. The destruction process is conducted in accordance with World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations to ensure transparency and prevent these items from re-entering the market.
For residents and travelers, this development highlights the government's ongoing efforts to curb the sale of pirated and counterfeit goods both online and offline.
