Former Abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan Arrested Over 92 Million Baht Embezzlement
A prominent abbot in Ayutthaya has been defrocked following his arrest on charges of embezzling 92 million baht in temple funds.
According to a report by Khaosod Online Thailand, police from the Crime Suppression Division have arrested the 66-year-old abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, known as Phra Wachirayan Wi (Atichot Dhammavaro) or 'Luang Phor Chot.' The arrest, which took place at the temple, follows an arrest warrant issued by the Region 1 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on September 8, 2026.
Authorities allege that the former abbot misappropriated 92 million baht in temple funds, subsequently transferring the money to a close female associate to launder the assets. He faces multiple charges, including malfeasance in office, misappropriation of property, and money laundering. Following the arrest, the former monk has reportedly agreed to be defrocked, though he requested time to compose himself before formally leaving the monkhood.
