Dispute Over Funeral Fund Embezzlement Resolved in Kanchanaburi
A 34-year-old woman successfully recovered half of her late mother's funeral fund after a local official allegedly withheld the money.
On September 9, 2026, lawyer Sitra Biabangkerd, known as 'Tum Ba Palang,' intervened in a dispute in Nong Ya sub-district, Kanchanaburi province. A 34-year-old woman, identified as Thidarat, sought assistance after a local sub-district administrative organization (SAO) deputy mayor allegedly embezzled over 100,000 baht from her deceased mother’s funeral welfare fund.
According to Khaosod Online, the conflict arose after Thidarat’s mother passed away in May. Thidarat discovered that the deputy mayor, who served as a committee member for the fund, had claimed the money for himself. The official initially offered only 20,000 baht, arguing that the mother had missed contribution payments and that he had covered them, thereby entitling him to the funds. Thidarat stated that she had previously attempted to pay the arrears while her mother was ill, but was told by the official that her mother’s membership had been terminated due to missed payments.
Following the intervention by Sitra, the parties reached a mediation agreement to split the funeral fund equally. For residents and expatriates, this case highlights the importance of transparency in local community welfare funds. While the immediate dispute is resolved, the incident underscores the necessity of verifying the management of local financial associations. It remains to be confirmed whether any further legal action will be taken against the official regarding the initial withholding of the funds.
