Authorities Crack Down on Environmental Destruction in Koh Samui

On September 9, 2026, Suchart Chomklin, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, announced a firm directive to prosecute those responsible for environmental damage on Koh Samui. According to Khaosod Online, heavy machinery was used to excavate rock formations and destroy coral reefs south of Koh Wang Tai, located in Taling Ngam sub-district, Surat Thani province. The unauthorized activity was reportedly intended to create a channel for large vessels, involving the creation of earthen embankments and the clearing of forest land within an area designated for the future Hat Khanom–Mu Ko Thale Tai National Park.

Minister Suchart emphasized that the government, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, prioritizes the protection of national resources and has instructed the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) to pursue legal action against all involved parties without exception. Dr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director-General of the DMCR, confirmed that officials have been mobilized to coordinate with national park authorities and specialized police units to investigate the site.
