Mystery Predator Identified as Asiatic Black Bear Cub in Prachin Buri
Authorities in Prachin Buri have identified a mysterious animal raiding local chicken coops as an Asiatic black bear cub, following a series of incidents.
Residents in Saphan Hin, Na Di District, Prachin Buri, have been on alert for three consecutive nights due to a predator targeting local livestock. According to Khaosod Online, the animal first struck on September 7, killing seven chickens at the home of a resident named Boonma. The predator returned on September 8 to consume three more chickens.
On the third night, September 9, at approximately 3:00 a.m., park officials and village surveillance teams witnessed the creature in action. While initial concerns suggested a sun bear, Nai Bunluean Saenkhot, head of the Khao Yai National Park Management Zone 9, confirmed that the animal is actually an Asiatic black bear cub weighing between 20 and 25 kilograms.
For residents and visitors in the area, this incident highlights the presence of wildlife near human settlements. The situation remains unusual, as officials noted the cub is acting alone without its mother, which is atypical for the species. Authorities are continuing to monitor the area to ensure public safety and to determine why the cub is separated from its parent. Residents are advised to remain cautious and report any further sightings to local park officials immediately. The investigation into the cub's behavior and its lack of maternal supervision is ongoing.
