CMDF Completes Study on Thai Brokerage Industry Structure

The Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) has finalized research on the optimal number of securities firms for Thailand's capital market and plans to submit findings to regulators.

According to a report by Prachachat Business, the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) has completed a research study evaluating the appropriate number of securities firms relative to the size of the Thai capital market. Jakchai Bun-ya-wat, representing the CMDF, announced that the findings are being prepared for submission to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) to facilitate further structural development of the industry.

This research is part of the CMDF’s broader policy-driven agenda, which has supported 63 projects with over 400 million baht in funding over the past six years. The initiative aims to refine the landscape of the Thai brokerage sector to better align with current market demands.

For residents and expatriates involved in local investments, this development may signal future shifts in the brokerage landscape, potentially impacting service availability or market competition. However, the specific recommendations of the study and the subsequent actions to be taken by the SEC and SET remain to be confirmed. Additionally, stakeholders are awaiting further clarity from the Thai Investors Association (TISA), which is expected by the end of this year. As this is a regulatory and structural study, it does not currently impact individual trading accounts or immediate financial services.
