People's Party Raises Concerns Over Local Government Solar Streetlight Procurement
A People's Party MP has alleged that local administrative organizations are purchasing solar streetlights at prices up to 10 times higher than market value.
During the third day of the parliamentary debate on the 2027 fiscal budget, held on September 9, 2026, People's Party MP Itthipol Choltansiri raised significant concerns regarding procurement practices within local administrative organizations (LAOs). Addressing the House of Representatives, Itthipol alleged that the acquisition of solar-powered streetlights through the 'Thai Innovation List' has resulted in costs that are four to ten times higher than standard market prices.
Itthipol argued that the current procurement framework inadvertently creates loopholes that allow for legal 'spec-locking,' where project requirements are tailored to specific vendors. He suggested that these inflated costs represent a misuse of public funds allocated to local authorities.
