Internal Conflict Stalls Thailand's NBTC Operations

According to a report by Khaosod Online on September 9, 2026, prominent legal expert Rujira Bunnag has expressed concern over the operational paralysis of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). The deadlock stems from internal disagreements regarding the status of the NBTC Chairman, Clinical Professor Dr. Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck.

Following a July 21, 2026, ruling by the NBTC selection committee, which suggested the Chairman may possess prohibited characteristics under Section 8 (2), some commissioners have refused to attend meetings. This boycott has repeatedly prevented the board from reaching a quorum, effectively halting decision-making on critical public interest matters. Rujira likened the current state of the NBTC to a car stuck in neutral, unable to move forward.

For residents and travelers, this situation is significant because the NBTC oversees essential digital infrastructure, including telecommunications and broadcasting services. A prolonged inability to function could impact the efficiency of digital services and national economic stability. While the legal dispute over the Chairman’s eligibility remains the primary cause of the gridlock, it is not yet confirmed how or when the government will intervene to resolve the impasse and restore the commission's ability to conduct official business.
