Pollution Control Department Investigates Illegal Waste Dumping at Rayong Data Center Site
Authorities have discovered 20 tons of construction waste illegally dumped at a site in Rayong, linked to a data center project, and have ordered its removal within seven days.
On September 9, 2026, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) announced an investigation into the illegal disposal of industrial waste in Ban Chang, Rayong province. According to Khaosod Online, the operation was initiated following public complaints regarding health concerns and environmental disturbances in the area.
A task force led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthiporn Phothong, acting under the direction of the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, inspected the site and identified approximately 20 tons of construction debris—including brick, stone, concrete, plastic, and fiberglass—used to fill a 1–2 rai plot of land. The waste has been linked to a local data center construction project.
Authorities have issued an order requiring the immediate removal of the waste within seven days. Furthermore, the PCD is coordinating with the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning to determine whether the data center project was required to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
For residents and visitors in the Ban Chang area, this incident highlights ongoing efforts to monitor industrial compliance. While the immediate cleanup is underway, the long-term environmental impact of the dumped materials and the regulatory status of the construction project remain under investigation.
